Background

Alex Villanueva graduated from Regents College of the University of the State of New York. He earned a Master of Public Administration from California State University, Northridge as well as earning a Doctor of Public Administration from the University of La Verne. He joined the Air Force in 1983, and was stationed at Norton Air Force Base in San Bernardino. After completing his enlistment in the Air Force, he was commissioned as an officer in the California Army National Guard. In 1986, he was sworn in as a Los Angeles County Deputy Sheriff [1]. In 2018, Villanueva was elected as the 33rd Sheriff of Los Angeles County. He was the first challenger to beat an incumbent in more than 100 years [2].

As a Sheriff, he has patrolled at East Los Angeles Station, been a drill instructor at the Sheriff’s Academy, and supervised the women’s jail at Lynwood [1]. He has also been a Sergeant at Lennox and Carson Sheriff Stations, the Community College Bureau and at the Advanced Office Training unit, as well as being a Watch Commander at the Pico Rivera Sheriff’s Station [3].

Homelessness

Villanueva supports the reduction of homelessness by expanding homeless outreach services such as the Homeless Outreach Services Team (HOST) and Mental Evaluation Team (MET), and dismantling the homeless industrial complex [3]. Villanueva also advocates for the provision of safe RV parking and campgrounds with wraparound service [5]. Additionally, Villanueva supports hiring more employees in order to address homelessness [6].

Crime

Villanueva supports reducing crime, particularly violent crime, specifically by ending the hiring freeze and restoring the budget in order to hire more personnel [7].

Mental Health

Villanueva supports funding proven mental health treatment and drug rehabilitation [5]. This includes reopening mental health facilities that have been closed in order to better equip the region to treat mental health [3].

Drugs

Villanueva believes in eliminating unlicensed or illegal marijuana grows and dispensaries [7].
