Dean Burke graduated from Georgia Southwestern University with a B.S. in Chemistry and Biology, Medical College of Georgia with an M.D., and practiced medicine at Mercer University School of Medicine. He has represented District 11 in the Georgia State Senate since 2013. Burke is Chairman or Vice-Chairman of four Senate committees and Majority Caucus Secretary. He previously took part in the Bainbridge City Council and the Lower Flint Water Council for five years .
Burke is currently Chairman of the Stratus Healthcare Governing Board and Chief Medical Officer at Memorial Hospital and Manor in Bainbridge. Burke’s former professional experience includes practicing obstetrics and gynecology for 27 years .
Burke supports reduced regulations on gun ownership and allowing citizens to carry concealed firearms.
Burke is pro-life and for increasing restrictions on abortion.
Burke believes in low interest loans and tax credits for small businesses, fewer state regulations on the private sector, and state job-training programs. He supports employment requirements and time limits on welfare.
Burke advocates for the death penalty, increasing funding to state prisons, implementing alternatives to prison time for non-violent criminals, and strengthening punishments for drug-related and sex offense crimes.
Burke does not support including sexual orientation in anti-discrimination legislation and recognition of same-sex marriages .
