Gloria Butler graduated from Perimeter College, where she received her associate’s degree in Business Administration. Butler was elected to the Georgia State Senate to represent District 55 in 1998. She is the Senate Democratic Caucus Chairwoman, as well as the Secretary for the State and Local Governmental Operations and Urban Affairs Committees. She is also a member of the Ethics, Health and Human Services, Reapportionment and Redistricting, Rules and Transportation Committees .
She is a member of the National Council of Negro Women, and has served on the Board of the South DeKalb Business Association.
Butler has sponsored SB 24, which provides a general increase in the minimum wage along with annual increases to match the cost of living. It also eliminates eligibility exemptions from the minimum wage .
Butler has sponsored SB 37, which enacts an agreement among the states to elect the president by national popular vote .
Butler has sponsored SB 55, which creates a program to compensate in part for the wage loss by an individual who is unable to work due to sickness or injury of themselves, sickness or injury of a family member, or the birth/adoption/fostering of a new child .
