Joseph James Smith has a bachelor’s degree in biology and a certification in prosthetics. He founded a company to make artificial limbs for local medical centers. He coaches wrestling and softball in Loudoun County Public Schools, and his four children went to LCPS [1, 2].
Smith believes transparency is a key to success and wants to rebuild trust between students, staff, the School Board, and the community [1, 3].
Smith wants to ensure every student has the resources they need to succeed, whether that be for gifted, special education, English as a Second Language, or other students. Additionally, he wants to make programs to support those who want to seek higher education or vocational training through ensuring counselors are prepared to help students with college applications, campus visits, and networking opportunities [1, 5].
Smith wants for parents to be more involved in their children’s educations through open communication, providing frequent updates, parent-teacher associations, and more. He thinks that parents have the right to make informed decisions about curriculum, policies, and activities [1, 3, 5].
Smith believes school safety is the first and foremost responsibility of the School Board and wants to put student resource officers in every school [1, 3, 5].
