Background

Kenneth Mejia is a Filipino-American born in Los Angeles and raised in San Fernando Valley. Mejia was raised by a single mother and went on to graduate from Woodbury University with a Bachelor’s of Science in Accounting. He received his Certified Public Accountant license (CPA) soon after and worked as an auditor for Ernst & Young, and later EVgo [1]. Mejia also formed a community group called “We Can Make a Difference – LA” which helped to provide supplies to unhoused communities and low-income families and organized environmental community clean ups throughout LA. Mejia was also a member of the LA Tenants Union and a Neighborhood Council Board Member for Koreatown in LA [1].

Homelessness

Mejia hopes to account for homeless programs and funds as well as audit and calculate the cost of homeless encampment and sweeps. He wants to identify vacant land and use it to house unhoused people. Mejia also wants to create maps and tools that can be used to connect unhoused people to services [1].

Housing

Mejia wants to create a database of all housing units in the City of LA with vacancy information, pricing, and ways for individuals to apply to rent. He wants to use vacancy taxes and linkage fees to address vacant houses. He also wants to work with the LA Housing to create a citywide tracker of rent increases for making decisions regarding rent control. He wants to work with the private sector as well as with nonprofits to create housing [1].

Environment

Mejia supports accounting for and auditing programs and funds that address climate change. Mejia wants to calculate the cost of planting trees throughout the city and audit the city’s effort in planting more trees. He also advocates for the removal of fossil fuel drilling, refining, and infrastructure [1].

Transportation

Mejia advocates for creating software to analyze how to upgrade transit. He also supports providing transparency within the LA Department of Transportation [1].

Other

Mejia wants to audit Los Angeles animal services and review shelter processes. He also wants to invest in the Animal Welfare Trust Fund as well as increase staffing for shelters. He advocates for improving animal intake in shelters [1].
