Melnyk has a bachelor’s degree in Elementary Education from Longwood University. She is a former teacher for Virginia Beach City Public Schools, and currently owns the Premier Millwork and Lumber Company. Melnyk was first elected to the Virginia Beach City Public Schools School Board in 2014 as a Republican. Melnyk was reelected to the School Board in 2018. In 2019, Melnyk was elected as Vice Chair of the Virginia Beach City Public Schools School Board, representing the Princess Anne District. Melnyk switched her political affiliation whilst on the School Board. In 2021, Melnyk ran for the 84th State Delegate District as a Democrat, losing to incumbent Glenn Davis [1, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7].
Whilst running for delegate in 2021, Melnyk advocated for increasing funding for all-day Kindergarten and Special Education across the state [5, 6].
Whilst running for delegate in 2021, Melnyk believed in providing mental and behavioral health services needed by students throughout the state .
Whilst running for Delegate in 2021, Melnyk argued for increasing teacher pay up to the national average throughout the state .
