Kimberly Mehlman-Orozco graduated from George Mason University with a PhD in criminology. Mehlman-Orozco currently serves as a human trafficking expert witness as a founding partner for Mahn, Mehlman & Associates, LLC; the executive director for Freedom Light; and CEO of Break the Chain. She also has authored a book called Hidden in Plain Sight: America’s Slaves of the New Millennium and has published other works in sex trafficking research. Mehlman-Orozco says her reason for running is because her daughter was denied certain accommodations by her school despite a disability [1, 2, 3, 6].
Mehlman-Orozco wants greater support of accommodations for students with disabilities. She says she joined the race because her daughter was denied such accommodations, leading to her filing a complaint against the school division and moving her daughter to a private school .
Mehlman-Orozco wants stricter school security and claims the Evolv metal detectors are inadequate solutions for security. She supports ramping up other facets of security .
Mehlman-Orozco supports a greater focus on recruiting and retaining teachers. She wants to increase pay and create a safe space for teachers in the classroom .
