Surles-Law wants to give Newport News students and teachers STEM opportunities [4].

After a law passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2020 created a “model policy” of laws to protect transgender and non binary students, Surles-Law initially voted against implementing the policy, along with the majority of the Newport News School Board 5-1. She and two other members asked for a meeting to further discuss the matter, and she and the majority of the board then voted 4-3 to implement the policy [5, 6, 7].
