Lisa R. Surles-Law received her Bachelor’s degree in Biology and Master’s degree in counseling/community agency from Hampton University. Surles-Law currently serves as Chairman of the Newport News City School Board, and she has served on the Board since 2018. Surles-Law has served as a Science Education Administrator at Jefferson Lab since 1991 and is currently the Science Education Program Team Lead. Surles-Law also sits on the YMCA of the VA Peninsulas Board of Directors [1, 3, 4].
Surles-Law wants to create a relationship between the Newport News City Council and the Newport News School Board. To do this, she wants both boards to be transparent with each other and, as a result, reevaluate the budget given to the school district .
Surles-Law wants to provide students and teachers with experiences in math and science, to encourage them to pursue STEM and contribute to the student-to-employer pipeline in the science community .
Surles-Law wants to give Newport News students and teachers STEM opportunities .
After a law passed by the Virginia General Assembly in 2020 created a “model policy” of laws to protect transgender and non binary students, Surles-Law initially voted against implementing the policy, along with the majority of the Newport News School Board 5-1. She and two other members asked for a meeting to further discuss the matter, and she and the majority of the board then voted 4-3 to implement the policy [5, 6, 7].
