Background

Ryan McElveen graduated from the University of Virginia with a Bachelor of Arts in Anthropology and East Asian Studies and from Columbia University with a Master’s Degree in International Affairs [1, 2, 3, 4, 7]. He currently works as the associate director of the John L. Thornton China Center of the Brookings Institute and serves on the National Committee on U.S. China Relations. McElveen formerly was an at-large member of the Fairfax County School Board from 2012 to 2019 and the board’s legislative liaison to Richmond [1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 7]. After leaving the School Board, he founded the Global Leaders of Fairfax County Program, which seeks to prepare its high school senior fellows to be global citizens and positively change their communities [1, 2, 4, 5, 6, 7].
