Tanya Bhasin graduated with a BA in Anthropology from George Washington University and a master’s in Public Health from Emory University. She has worked for the CDC as a Research Scientist in the National Center for Birth Defects and Disabilities, where she aided in studying developmental disabilities. She focused on autism as a member of the Autism and Developmental Disabilities Monitoring Network, reviewing risk factors for ASDs and other conditions. She then studied the effectiveness of family-based therapy in the Division of Community Health and Research in the Department of Pediatrics at EVMS.

Bhasin has focused on doing public outreach in Atlanta, going to detention centers and the Hugh Spalding Children’s Hospital in Atlanta and spending time with the Minority AIDS Information Network. She also worked at Blocker Family Y as a board member, Postpartum Support Virginia, Norfolk Department of Public Health, and Community Health Improvement Planning Team [1].

Bhasin has been labeled as a Democrat under VPAP [2].

Bhasin disagrees with Norfolk School Board’s decision to make masks optional. She believes masks should be required in order to protect kids at school. Bhasin prioritizes the mental health toll the pandemic has created and promotes virtual presentations to aid in understanding it [3].


Bhasin supports increasing funding for schools in Norfolk. She has placed an emphasis on supporting teachers and principals as many are resigning. She also favors learning in diverse environments. Bhasin wants the Virginia General Assembly to more thoroughly implement the 2019 Standards of Quality in order to close disparities in achievements and improve equity among students [4].
