Augherton was the first elected mayor of the Town of Cave Creek, and he has been a town council member, planning and zoning commissioner, member of the board of adjustment, part of the MAG regional council representing Cave Creek, member of the Arizona Judicial Advisory Commission, and member of the Maricopa County Superior Court . Augherton is the former president and chief executive of the Arizona Association of Industries .

Augherton wants Cave Creek to restore its rural appearance in the downtown area. He would like to bury all overhead electric lines, remove all sodium-vapor street lights, replace them with natural gas lamps in a Territorial style, and restore native trees for landscaping. He would also like to remove all roundabouts, speed bumps, traffic calmers, overhead pedestrian bridges, and other urban accommodations, opting for a more horse-friendly town, with horse hitches, watering troughs, and a shaded walking path .
