Background

W. Cooper Brown IV has a bachelor’s degree in English from Lynchburg College and a law degree from the University of Wyoming. During his second year in law school, Brown completed an internship in the Franklin County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office [6, 7, 9].

Brown joined the Franklin County Commonwealth’s Attorney’s Office as an assistant prosecutor in 2011. In July of 2015, he was appointed by judges in the 22nd Judicial District to be Franklin County Commonwealth’s Attorney at the resignation of Tim Allen [1, 6, 7, 9].

In 2015, Brown fired Robert Deatherage, an assistant commonwealth’s attorney, via a text message after Deatherage had been out of office with an illness and had documentation from his doctor excusing him from work. According to Deatherage, he had no idea why Brown would fire him. Brown did not respond to WSLS 10’s requests for comments [4].
