William Bates earned a bachelor’s degree in recreational therapy from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and studied educational leadership and administration at George Mason University. He earned a master’s degree in special education and teaching from the California University of Pennsylvania and is currently pursuing a Doctor of Education degree from Virginia Tech University. He has been certified to teach special education by the state of Virginia.
Bates has served as a high school principal in Fairfax County Public Schools (FCPS) and the assistant superintendent of school support for Baltimore County Public Schools. He currently serves as the Chief Academic Officer for Falls Church City Public Schools. He was awarded FCPS Principal of the Year in 2015 and was a Washington Post Distinguished Ed. Leadership Award Winner in 2015 .
Bates advocates for equity and accessibility in education. Due to his leadership role in FCPS, education is one of his main issues .
